 HPT
« Thread Started on Sept 6, 2009, 3:40pm »

Hi

I am looking for some advice or tips on how to deal with the HPT.

I'm now at the stage of my training that I should be thinking of giving the Part 1 test ago to see how I get on.

I feel that I'm getting to grip with the theory side, I have managed a couple of 100%, think my average for 10 plus 100 mock questions is 97% on the theory trainer and last week I did 3 theory test modules with my trainer which was 250 question, getting 3 wrong.

It's the HPT that is worrying me, I have for a few months been practicing the HPT on various training disc's, and I seem to on most tries score in the mid 50 area, I was hoping by now that I would be scoring on or above 57 by now. I have used Focus DVDi, The DSA official guide to HPT, DVD, and the AA pass your theory CD ROM.

I would appreciate any advice or tips, and even what people's thoughts are on the actual HPT test compared to the training material available.

Thanks
John

Hi woodyloon,

I, too, had problems getting to grips with the HPT. My trainer at the time advised me to get Driving Test Success, All Tests 2008/9. This CD Rom has over 200 video clips.

I found my own technique in clicking for the hazards which was wait until you see a possible hazard then click, wait a second and click again, wait a second and click again. By doing this I was putting myself in the scoring zone everytime, usually around the 4 or five mark.

When I went for my Pt 1 test all the videos were different to the ones I had been practicing on, so you need to bear this mind, but I managed to get a 64.

Hope this helps,

Mark, 8-)

Thanks for your advice Mark.

It's the Driving Test All Tests Interactive that I have.

I try when doing the practise to click when I think it's a hazard just as if I was checking my mirrors. Then if I think it develops I click again to show like I have slowed down or changed position, and then a 3rd time if we are stopping. I do worry that on the day that will possibly get you a zero. It might be that on the clips that I'm scanning to far ahead and missing or being late on the hazard developing, a bit like tunnel vision. Clutching at straws also comes to mind.

Thanks
John

Hi Woodyloon,

I personally would advise you to just use ONLY the focus dvd as I think that using several types can affect your training (it did mine).

I agree 100% with Mark18980's technique double click and if you are too early with the first click you will score with the second.

Dont be afraid to click up to as many as about 10 times per clip as long as there is no' RHYTHM 'to your clicks you wont get marked down.

IMO if you are consistently getting mid 50's with focus you will be ok as I think the part 1 test is easier than focus.

Keep practising and good luck.

I found that 3 clicks in 2 seconds got me 'in the zone'

Click - wait one second - click - wait one second - click

Mark 18980 advised you to do the same:

if you click every half a second then maybe you are asking for trouble.

It's been a while since I've done it. I advise my pupils to do this and almost all pass first time.

As an ex drummer isnt that a rythmn.

I admit i used something very similar but tried to ensure that clicks didnt hit a beat, Only once on practice did i get the warning about my clicks.

It is not easy as you can see things so easy you click before the problem arises. I just had to relax and see it with experienced eyes like a learner would. Dont see the hazard before it is a hazzard. We all know that the horse riding down the field to your left is going to run out infront of you. But whilst its in the field its not a hazard.

Woodyloon.
I used all the Dvd's that you mentioned and the one thats closest to the real thing is the DSA one, trouble is it only has 10 clips if it's the same as the one I used in February and in that one you have to click the instant a hazard starts to develop or you don't get a 5.
I used that one just before my second attempt and scored 67 even though I completely missed the second hazard on the double clip.
My trainer told me to click on seeing the hazard, say my name (not out loud though), then click again. That way you shouldn't get the dreaded cheat screen which I did get on my first attempt,

Hi

This might be a stupid question, but when doing the HPT are you viewing the clip on the full screen of the monitor.

Thanks DundeeGuy

What was your technique when you was doing your HPT?

What is the place like in Dundee where you sit the Part1?

See the potential hazard - click, come off gas - click, brake - click.

Dundee centre is ok. Guy behind the desk is a bit 'regimental' and easily upset though! The guy that takes you through to your pc seemed fine though. Good cop, bad cop I think!
