I have not long passed my part 3 and whilst being a trainee i did experience from time to time test centre examiners being very rude to me - speaking to me as if i had no clue on how to teach a pupil - most of the pupils i took up there had been given to me so i hadn't taught them but assessed them before to make sure they are safe. Anyway I took a pupil for her test last week - she had had 40 plus hours with me and it was her second attempt. That morning and all week she had extra lessons and i couldn't fault her. Took her for her test and knew she was a bit nervous. Off she went for her test but came back 5 mins early. Thought at this point there must be something wrong. She didn't want me to listen to the brief so i waited. After the examiner had finished (at this point i had gathered she had failed) he came up to me in front of other instructors telling me how dangerous my pupil was and infact how very dangerous she was and not to send anyone like this again. I was so shocked that he had said this and in front of other instructors. He even said you could have displayed your badge (which the pupil had explained that i didn't charge as the green was in the post and he said 'oh well it doesnt matter anyway'). Again i still couldn't believe this as my pupil was fine with me but of course it was down to nerves. On speaking to her she said at one point he had to warn her of something but not noticed that he had used the pedals and hadn't touched the wheel. She even asked twice for him to return back to the test centre and he just told her to carry on. Surely this is a case of 'lets just pick on the new ADI'. If she was that dangerous surely he should have returned. Has anyone else experienced this attitude from examiners or is it just me.

Hi Angela sorry it didnt go to well. If your pupil had asked to stop the test the examiner would have abandoned the test there and then and walked back to the test centre, either with your pupil or he would have left her in the car untill you returned. He should not have spoken to you like that in front of other instructors,You should have a word with the test centre manager.

Angela, Sound like you've come across a bad egg there. So far, I've only come across friendly professional examiners at the test centres near me. I was told off for eating in the waiting room, but I deserved it! Talk to the Test Centre manager and see if that makes any difference.

Hi Angela, sorry to hear about you bad experience. It may be worth ringing the test centre manager to talk it through to see if there are any issues to deal with. When I was training I sat in on two tests. They both failed first time, one maaged it on his own and the other due to bits I had not covered. Swindon had very few proper sets of traffic lights. I had not covered turning right at a busy set of lights. Pupil did not pull up to turn point so was given a serious. also on TIR pedestrians walked behind while he was reversing so another serious. These were bits I had not covered properly. I have learnt my lesson. If test centre think you are missing things in your training you need to find out. It also helps to sit in on tests to find out exactly what the standard is. It is a great learning experience. If it is just that the examiner is a bully, then that needs dealing with by the test centre manager. Please don't take these comments as a put down. It is meant to be helpful rather than critical. Steve

thanks for all your comments. I think i will speak to the test centre manager (lucky for me the person who passed me on my part 3). I had the same examiner again for a pupil this monday. He took one look and me and obviously remembered me from the week before. My pupil was on his second attempt (previously had international licence and been driving for 23 years). First time failed due to not use of mirrors enough. So second time round took him out and his driving was alot better with mirror checks etc so thought this time round would pass (seeing as he only got 4 minors but obviously 1 serious on his first attempt). So second time round i was shocked to find he has failed. The same nasty examiner had given him 19 minors and 2 serious. Something very wrong with the marking system here i thought see as it was only 4 weeks since his last test or maybe a case of bullying.

Hi Angela
What you experienced was outrageous!. I was an RAF fast jet pilot instructor examiner and the airline captain / examiner, and the one thing you dont do is criticise another instructor in front of other instructors or students. Its a big no no and totally unprofessional. That kind of person should not be an examiner!
Kind regards
Andy

feel for you angela...what a nightmare. and of course, you will now be increasingly suspecting foul play when even there may be none. i would have thought it would be wise to ensure that you do sit in the back on your tests..... for the good reasons given previously and also so you are witnessing any faults first hand.
the other thing i would approach the tcm with is whether you can contact him/her with your tests coming up (say for a set period), so that he/she can ensure this examiner does not do your tests..... this may well be impossible for logistical reasons but .... why not ask the question? they are providing a service at the end of the day, and your perceptions are important.
need to deal with this carefully though.....i personally would not go in all guns blazing... you don't want to be upsetting staff in the centre...... a slur on your name/school is def not what you (or your pupils) want or need.
i wish you well
